The Royal Cultural Vibes in Kathmandu Durbar Square, Nepal

Located at the heart of capital city, Kathmandu Durbar Square (Basantapur Durbar Kshetra) is the front of the old royal palace of the former Kathmandu Kingdom. It is one of three Durbar (royal palace) Squares in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is also known as Hanuman Dhoka square is one of the major attractions in Kathmandu Valley.

Besides the magnificent temples and shrines, it has other interesting aspects are various festivals , cultural activities and traditions people are following from centuries, which are presented in the Durbar Square. The major festivals include Indrajatra, Dashain, Gaaijatra, Machchhindra-nath jatra ets. These are the occasion when the people from all over the city gather here to mark their centuries old traditions. All the carving and architecture in this area are exceptionally fine which make the architecture in this Hanuman-dhoka Durbar square among the most important sights for travellers to see.

Things to do

Shopping Kathmandu Darbar Square has always been a central hub for tourists since a long duration in past. The shops around the square provide multiple types of goods from trekking goods to tattoo parlours, curio shops to Gift shops everything is available around Basantapur Darbar Square. This has resulted in the square being a hub for shopping.

Kasthamandap (pavilion of wood) it was a three-roofed building which used to be one of the oldest in the square and used to hold rare images of the god Gorakhnath. Kasthamandap was completely destroyed in the 2015 earthquake but reconstruction is in progress.

Trailokya Mohan Narayan temple which was the tallest in the square and dedicated to Vishnu was also completely destroyed in the 2015 earthquake.

Kumari Bahal is the House of the Living Goddess. After via the entrance in Darbar Square and walking past the entrance corridor, a small square holds intricate wooden carvings that decorate the Kumari’s residence.

Taleju Temple one of most beautiful temples in the square but the entry is restricted and can be Viewed from a distance only.

Shiva-Parvati Temple  is adorned with images of Shiva and his consort Parvati.

Basantapur Tower though was damaged in the 2015 earthquake still stands and under reconstruction.

Gaddi Baihak is the white building that dominated the southern portion of the square and has a great historical significance has been rebuilt.
